What Is a Curtain Wall System?

A curtain wall is a non-structural exterior glass and aluminum facade attached to the building's structural frame. Curtain walls do not carry the building’s floor or roof loads. They support their own weight and transfer wind and other applicable loads to the building structure. This allows for expansive glass facades that flood interiors with natural light and create striking architectural appearances. Curtain wall systems are designed for larger openings, multi-story applications, and environments where high wind loads and enhanced structural performance are required. Storefront glass systems, by contrast, are typically used for ground-level and low-rise applications, commonly installed floor-to-floor in commercial buildings. See our Storefront Glass page for those needs.

Systems We Install

Curtain wall systems we install

Stick-Built Curtain Walls

Assembled on-site piece by piece. Ideal for complex building shapes, smaller commercial projects, and renovations where flexibility is needed.

Unitized Curtain Walls

Glass and frame components pre-assembled before arriving on site. Unitized systems offer faster installation and consistent quality control, and are well suited for mid-rise commercial projects.

Structural Glazing

Glass bonded directly to the frame using structural silicone sealant — no visible caps or pressure plates. The most seamless, modern look available.

Glass Options

Glass options for curtain walls

Insulated Glass Units (IGUs)

Double or triple pane for maximum energy efficiency. The standard for modern commercial buildings in Florida's climate.

Low-E Coated Glass

Reflects heat while allowing natural light, reducing HVAC costs year-round.

Tinted & Reflective Glass

Solar control and architectural variety. Available in a range of tints.

Laminated Glass

Enhanced security, impact resistance, and sound insulation.

Hurricane Impact Glass

Impact-rated glazing must be specified as part of an approved complete system suitable for the project’s location and design requirements.

Spandrel Glass

Opaque glass to conceal floor lines, columns, and mechanical systems for a clean facade.

Cost Factors

What affects curtain wall installation cost?

  • Building size and facade area — Total square footage is the primary factor
  • System type — Unitized systems have higher fabrication costs but lower installation labor
  • Glass specification — Standard IGUs vs. high-performance low-E or impact-rated glass
  • Building height and access — Higher floors require scaffolding or swing-stage equipment
  • Complexity of building geometry — Curved facades increase costs
  • Florida wind-load zone — Affects glass thickness and framing engineering requirements

For a project review, provide available architectural elevations, opening dimensions, glazing specifications, structural details and the proposed construction schedule. Identify access constraints and the parties responsible for engineering, approvals and adjoining construction so the proposal can define the glazing scope and coordination requirements.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a curtain wall and a storefront glass system?
Storefront glass systems are typically used for ground-level and low-rise applications, commonly installed floor-to-floor in commercial buildings. Curtain wall systems are engineered for larger openings and mid-rise to multi-story buildings where high wind loads, thermal movement, and enhanced structural performance are required.
What is the difference between stick-built and unitized curtain walls?
Stick-built curtain walls are assembled on-site, offering flexibility for complex shapes. Unitized curtain walls are pre-assembled as complete panels in a factory — faster and with higher quality control.
Do curtain wall systems meet Florida hurricane codes?
System specifications and applicable approval requirements are reviewed for each project.
How long does curtain wall installation take?
Timelines vary based on building size, system complexity, and access requirements. A small commercial project may take a few weeks; a larger mid-rise installation may take several months.
Do you work directly with architects and general contractors?
Yes — this is a core part of our business. We provide shop drawings and coordinate with structural engineers. Scheduling is coordinated with the project team after scope, fabrication and access requirements are confirmed.
What is a curtain wall system?
A curtain wall is a non-structural glass and aluminum facade system that covers the exterior of a building. It handles wind, rain, and thermal loads while carrying none of the building’s structural weight.
What curtain wall systems do you install?
We install stick-built, unitized, and semi-unitized curtain wall systems, as well as structural silicone glazing (SSG) and point-fixed spider glazing.
