Glass railings for Florida homes: what to know before you buy

February 2026  ·  Aluminate Glass Orlando

Why glass railings are so popular in Florida

It makes sense. Florida living is about outdoor spaces, water views, pool decks, and open air. Glass railings let you enjoy all of it without a metal or wood railing interrupting your sightlines. They also work beautifully indoors — staircases, mezzanines, and interior balconies.

But before you buy, there are a few Florida-specific things worth knowing.

Florida Building Code requirements

All exterior residential railings in Florida must meet Florida Building Code standards, which specify minimum height (typically 36" for decks under 30" above grade, 42" for higher), structural load requirements, and baluster spacing. For commercial applications, requirements are more stringent.

Our systems are engineered to meet these requirements. We handle all permitting coordination.

Pool fencing: Florida Statute 515

If you're using glass as a pool barrier, Florida Statute 515 applies. It requires barriers to be at least 48" high, with self-closing, self-latching gates. Glass pool fencing can absolutely meet these requirements — and it's one of the most visually attractive options available.

The different types of glass railing systems

Frameless glass railings (also called standoff or base-shoe systems) are the most popular for Florida homes. They use 1/2" tempered glass with minimal hardware — the cleanest look possible. Post-and-rail systems use glass infill panels within a metal frame. Both are excellent choices depending on your budget and aesthetic.

What to ask your installer

Make sure your installer provides documentation that the system meets Florida Building Code for your specific application. Ask about the glass thickness and whether it's tempered. Ask about the wind-load rating. And ask whether they handle permit coordination.

At Aluminate Glass, we handle all of this as standard practice. Call us at 407-956-5313 for a free estimate.
